Thai
Massage
Thai
(Yoga) Massage has often been described as assisted Hatha (posture
based), Yoga. Performed on a floor mat in comfortable clothes,
this style of massage incorporates Tai Chi movements, rhythmic
motion, palming and thumbing along energy lines, gentle stretching
& breath work. Using hands, feet, arms and legs, the practitioner
guides the recipient through a series of yoga postures, creating
a harmonious and therapeutic dance, which leads to greater physical
awareness, grace and spiritual energy. This spirit of metta (unconditional
love and compassion) lies at the heart of this approach. This
well-respected and proven healing art is quickly gaining popularity
in the west because of its meditative approach and its applications
of yoga’s well-established benefits.
Traditional
Thai Massage has been around for at least 1000 years, and is practiced
in much the same way as it was in the past. The formation of Thai
Massage, was influenced by both Chinese and Indian culture and
religion, due to the fact Thailand is situated so close to China
and historically utilized India as a major trade route. As a result
Thai Massage is based on Tui Na (a Chinese massage and manipulation
technique) and Buddist philosophy. According to folklore passed
down by tradition, the founder of Thai Massage was Jivaka Kumar
Bhaccha, also known as Chivago Komparaj.
Thai medical
theory is based on the belief that the body’s Vital Life
Energy flows along channels called Sen. In China this energy is
called Qi, while in Indian it is called Prana. In order for the
body to function normally, the supply of Vital Life Energy (Qi,
Prana), has to meet the demand of the physical, mental and emotional
processes of the body. When there is an imbalance or blockage
of the Vital Life Energy the result is pain or disease. Thai Massage
releases blockages thus providing an unobstructed flow of Vital
Life Energy, resulting in feelings of relaxation, peace of mind,
happiness, flexibility and youthfulness.
